An Evening at River Cree Resort & Casino

Most visitors picture the gaming floor when someone says Enoch. The people I know out here check the rink schedule first. The resort has two NHL-sized sheets attached to it, home to the largest adult hockey league in western Canada, and on a weeknight you can sit at the sports bar and watch beer-league players through the glass while a game plays on the screens behind you. That combination does not exist anywhere else on this side of Edmonton.

I went out on a Thursday in the fall, leaving from downtown just after six. The drive is 12 miles and took roughly 22 minutes, which is about what it always takes unless Whitemud is having a bad day. I had no show ticket, no room booked, and no plan beyond dinner, a walk through both gaming floors and a look at what has changed since the construction fences went up.

What follows is that evening in order: the road out, the doors, the floors, dinner, the bill, and whether I would do it again on a weeknight.

Where it is, how I got there, and where I parked

The address is 300 East Lapotac Blvd, Enoch, Alberta, T7X 3Y3, on the Enoch Cree Nation reserve bordering the west edge of the city. From Edmonton International Airport the drive runs roughly 20 to 30 minutes depending on route and traffic. From the west end it is a short hop; a free shuttle also runs between the resort and West Edmonton Mall.

Parking is where the property quietly wins. Self-parking is free and valet is complimentary for guests and patrons, so there is no reason to circle. I took a spot in the outer lot and walked in past the block-heater plug-ins, which locals will recognise as a January detail that matters more than any lobby feature.

Here is my one real complaint, and it has nothing to do with the building. Arriving without a car is genuinely awkward. The nearest transit stop, Granville Drive & Greenough Bay, is a 14-minute walk away. Buses from that stop reach West Edmonton Mall Bay A in about 29 minutes and run every 20 minutes, which is workable, but there is no direct bus to the airport at all: the transit routing takes 1 hour 34 minutes at best and can stretch past two hours with transfers. For a property this size on the city’s doorstep, that gap is hard to explain away.

Hours, and when the place is actually quiet

The casino floor and the slots run 24 hours. Table games keep shorter hours, and the poker room changes its schedule midweek, which catches people out.

A Thursday around seven is the sweet spot if you dislike crowds. The floor was busy enough to feel alive and never so full that I waited for anything. Friday and Saturday, especially when The Venue has a show, are a different property entirely.

What is inside: two floors, a concert room and two rinks

The main gaming floor is completely smoke-free and holds 1,665 slot machines. Attached to it is Embers, the smoke-friendly section, with 405 slots and 14 table games of its own. Across the property there are 46 table games in total, plus a poker room with 14 tables running cash games; wait lists there are handled through the free Poker Atlas app, which saves standing around.

The Venue at River Cree is the concert room, 24,000 square feet of event space seating up to 2,400, with configurations running from about 500 up to that ceiling. Tickets are sold at the box office inside the Players Club, and that desk takes debit or credit only, no cash. Worth knowing before you drive out for a same-day ticket.

The resort opened on October 26, 2006 at a cost of $178 million and was the first Indigenous-owned casino in Alberta. Enoch Cree Nation took sole ownership in 2014. A $200-million expansion broke ground in September 2024: an 18-storey hotel tower with 230 rooms and more than 30 luxury suites, a pool with two waterslides, and more than 40,000 square feet of event space. The existing hotel has 249 non-smoking rooms, 11 of them suites.

Where I ate

Dinner was at Tap 25, the sports bar, mostly because of the rink windows. The regulars around me were ordering the Tap Loaded Burger and the Tap Platter; the prime rib dinner is the other thing that keeps coming back to tables there. Since July 2024, Tap 25, Italia, Cha Express and Fatburger are open to all ages, with minors accompanied by an adult, which changed the early-evening crowd noticeably.

The food options across the property:

1) The Kitchen Restaurant, Canadian and steak, with a Friday and Saturday dinner buffet from 4:00 pm to 10:00 pm

2) Tap 25, the sports bar facing the rinks

3) Fatburger, cooked-to-order Alberta Angus beef, chicken tenders and wings

4) Italia: A Taste of Italy

5) Cha Xpress, quick service

6) Cree Subs, for sandwiches, hotdogs and taco bowls made fresh daily

7) The Lobby Coffee Bar, serving Starbucks coffee by the fireplace

I finished with a coffee from the lobby bar rather than sitting at the bar again. It is the calmest corner of the building and the only place where you can hear yourself.

What the evening cost, and the rules at the door

Parking: nothing. Valet: nothing. Dinner sat in the casual-to-mid-range band that covers the buffet, the burger counter and the sports bar; there is no fine-dining tier on site to blow the budget on. The only hard rule I ran into was the card-only box office.

Age is straightforward: 18 and over for the gaming floor, and 18-plus with no minors for every show at The Venue. Bring photo ID even if you are well past the line, because the door staff check.

If you sign up for the Players Club, new members get 100 loyalty points at registration, and points convert at 2,000 points to $1 in River Cree Bucks, spendable on dining, gaming, spa and retail across the property. Players aged 50 and over fall into the Cruiser’s Club, which adds double-point days, priority seating and separate events.

For anyone weighing a room instead of the drive home, rate-tracking data puts October as the cheapest month at an average of C$217 a night and February as the dearest at C$335, with Wednesdays averaging C$207 and Fridays C$429. Breakfast is not bundled into the standard rate; it is paid, at The Kitchen.

Is it worth the drive?

For a weeknight out from Edmonton, yes. I left around half past eleven and was home in under half an hour, having paid nothing to park and nothing to have the car brought around. The draw is not one thing; it is that a burger, a poker table, a rec-league game through the glass and a concert room all sit within about a hundred metres of each other.

Bring a car or a firm ride plan. That is the real condition of the visit, and the rest of it works.
